The Bahamas Writer:

Online markets

Queries and submissions are similar to print publications.

· Check online guidelines.

· Only send attachments if guidelines allow; otherwise submit in body of email.

· Use your "sig" (signature) at the end of a query or cover letter, e.g.

Your name
Your email address
URL if you have one
You may also add your address and phone/fax numbers.

Rights

"All Rights":

Just what it says. You've sold all rights to a publication and without its permission can never sell the work to another publication.

"First Serial Rights":

Permission to publish your work for the first time in that particular publication. This can be further defined as "First North American Serial Rights" or "First British Serial Rights".

"One Time Rights":

Permission to publish your work one time.

"Second Serial Rights":

Permission to republish a work.

"Subsidiary Rights":

Rights leading from publishing rights, such as in the movie industry.

There you have it all in a "nutshell"!

I can only give you the basics though. You might want to consider purchasing
Formatting & Submitting Your Manuscript (Edited by Jack and Glenda Neff, Don Prues and the Editors of Writer's Market). It's "an easy-to-use guide, with dozens of charts, lists, models and sidebars showing what you need to know to submit your work correctly and enhance your chance of being published."

Good luck and happy submitting!
