Book proposals
Non Fiction - send cover or query letter (include target market(s) and how your book compares to others covering similar topics or theme), synopsis, outline, page with information about yourself, and sample chapters.
Fiction - basically same as above.
Book manuscripts
Some writers' handbooks say that a cover page is not necessary, but if you use one: First page - name, address, phone/fax and email address at top left; word count and copyright top right. Title and your byline half way down the page.
Next page - start your first chapter. Center chapter number and title one third down page. Your last name and page number can be typed in the upper right of each page. You may want to include the title of your book as well. Make sure each chapter starts on a new page.
Poems
Usually no need to query. Check individual guidelines, but general rules are:-
· One poem per page.
· Put your name, address, phone/fax number and email address in upper right hand corner.
· Type double spaced.
· Use 8 ½" x 11" good quality white paper.
· If the poem continues on succeeding pages, attach them with a paper clip (do not staple).
· A handy guide for poets is 2002 Poet's Market: 1,800 Places to Publish Your Poetry by Nancy Breen (Editor).
Screen plays/Scripts
Usual query letter. Check individual guidelines. General rules are:-
· Submit your script in a binder.
· A "release form" should be provided by the producer or agent (see "Writing A - Z", edited by Kirk Polking)
· Usually divided into 3 - 6 acts.
