Promotional writing (Public Relations work) can be fun, provide additional income and if you write it well, you may get a byline.
My first introduction to this aspect of writing was when I ditched a well paid secretarial job to jump-start my writing career. But I didn't have a PLAN! I only received one response to my small classified ad. and that was from an acquaintance!
Grateful for the assignment, I threw myself wholeheartedly into my friend's short-term project, writing the text for his villa and car rental brochures.
Most of the local PR market seemed to be swallowed up by a couple of established writers with their own agencies.
Then I heard that a local shopping mall needed a writer and I rushed there, with clips, pen and note pad in hand, to meet the marketing manager.
This began a great year of interviewing storeowners for feature stories, covering mall events and assisting with seasonal promotions. I used my cheap little camera (this was before digitals) and clambered all over the mall taking photos of proprietors, customers and events.
Leading up to Christmas, I was asked to come up with a story for a colouring book, to be given out to customers' children. I complied with a lighthearted tale about a "wayward" parrot. A staff member did the illustrations and the kids loved it!
Another pasture for promotional writing is the large number of restaurants that want short pieces submitted to the local press, to attract customers to their eateries.
I wrote a couple of these articles, attempting to make the restaurant sound more of an interesting place to eat in than a list of what was on the menu. One title was "Le Shack lives on - and your grandmother will love it!"
You can write articles for almost any business or organization and submit them to the media as press releases. From time to time I do this free for local charities or worthwhile causes.
The highlight of my PR work occurred when a local shipping agency asked me to write about Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. There would be no cash payment, but my husband and I got to go on a complimentary five day Caribbean cruise, so I could write about Royal Caribbean first hand!
Now, that was really fun!
