1. Bahamas Writer Writers’ Group: “For the love of writing”

The Bahamas Writer Writers’ Group (BWWG), which meets monthly in Cable Beach, Nassau, Bahamas, is the offspring of www.bahamaswriter.com - “an informal guide and source of inspiration for new and not so new writers worldwide”.

Membership in the BWWG is informal and free. Access to the Internet is not necessary, but an advantage. Presently, the only requirements are a passion for writing, love of the written word, a desire for excellence, and minimum age of eighteen.

It’s hoped that our new writers’ group will motivate more local writers in the Bahamas to become successfully published here and abroad. The BWWG will eventually have a “pool” of talented writers, for publications to draw from.

Bahamas Writer visitors from the Family Islands and around the world are invited to stop by when they’re in town.

Check out one of our early news releases at http://www.bahamaswriter.com/press_release.htm

At the first meeting of the BWWG, held in the Pasión Tea and Coffee Boutique, Cable Beach, on January 11, 2003, nine members shared their writing achievements and aspirations. They also discussed problems encountered by local writers in getting their work recognized and suggested ways in which this could be resolved.

Due to the growing number of members, meetings are now being held in “Da Shack”, New Providence Community Church, Cable Beach, Nassau.

Seasoned writers, along with those still struggling to put the right words on paper and others with work already submitted for publication, met at the new location on February 8, 2003, for the second BWWG meeting.

The sixteen men and women attending the meeting came from a variety of backgrounds. Five members presented their work, ranging from poetry to fiction, for helpful critique by the group.

Some of the topics discussed were market news, Internet opportunities, “print on demand” publishing and copyright. To illustrate that ideas are not copyrighted, members were given a paragraph to take home, develop into whatever form of writing they chose and bring back to the group.

The next meeting of the BWWG will be held in “Da Shack”, NPCC, from 9.30 a.m. – 12 noon, Saturday, March 8, 2003.

2. Poem – “An Ode to Bahamas Writers” by Dennis Dames

As the clock ticks before the timekeeper…
Bahamas writers introduce themselves
In an array of personalities and talents
Fellowshipping about life and experiences…
Sharing thoughts of culture and love
Everyone appears eager to blend…
Ears at attention,
And consumption of ideas soothe the soul
Producing smiles and laughter for all
Inspiration, the satisfying calling
A diverse group of individuals… indeed
Eager to expand their respective horizons
And to provide encouragement accordingly
It’s a positive affair… that is uplifting
Inner thoughts produced into words around the room
Creating an atmosphere of gifted values
Enthusiasm subtly holds the group together
A wonderful way to start the day
Bahamas writers upward to the next levels
Talents and successes on the verge of explosion
Keep at it friends… our potentials are without end

3. Writing tip – competitions (Fay Knowles)

My mentor from the eighties, Jan Valpy, once gave me a few words of advice regarding writing competitions. She said to take a look at who the judges are and read what they themselves write. This will give you a pretty good idea of what they’ll be looking for when they judge a competition.

Go to the competition website and look for a link to the judges. Check them out. Then go to a search engine like Google.com and type in the judges’ names. See what the judges have written themselves and find out anything that you can about them.

Also, study the work that won the competition in previous years. And consider whether your submission will be unusual or original, or if you think there might be lots of other submissions with the same theme?

Doing your homework with writing competitions is just as important as market research!

4. Market tip – poetry: Joanne Hoople (Canada)

Joanne Hoople passes on this helpful poetry market tip: “All you poets, I happened on an interesting site for submitting poetry. No pay, but maybe a good place to start. The turnaround time is not as long as some - http://www.jacobytebooks.com/poetry/
The whole site, http://www.jacobytebooks.com, was recommended by a fellow writer and is worth a look. Joanne”.

5. Successes – Art Montague (Canada)
Art Montague's story "Up in Smoke" is in the February issue of Detective Mystery Stories Magazine. Semi-retired police detective John Johns solves a nasty case of arson.

Art is also featured in the Wynterblue Thunder Spotlight this month, online at http://www.wynterblue.ca/montague.html

His novel Donkey Serenade is finally available in a trade paperback version and sports a new author-designed cover. Joanne Hoople (Art’s wife and “marketing manager”) says: Now the real promotion starts!

6. Condolences to “Globe” Editor Nikki Fowler:

Deepest condolences to Nicole (“Nikki”) Fowler, Publisher/Editor-in-Chief of “Globe Magazine”, on the tragic loss of her husband Stephen. This young Bahamian businessman was devoted father of the couple’s three-year-old daughter, Zoë. Stephen was Managing Director of “Globe” and also played a key role in his family’s Andros and Nassau businesses.
